expo18.jpg If anyone wants to earn 2 points extra credit for 3rd quarter, Mr. Adler needs help setting up for the Engineering Expo over the weekend . If you want to do it, you have to see him Friday (room 325 across from my room) and sign up for a time slot to help set up the show Make sure he sees you there the day of the expo...he will give me a list of who gets extra credit, Info about the expo is at http://www.beanengineer.org/ It is at White Plains High school on Sunday, April 15.
Thursday:
Follow the instructions with of teacher covering the class. Have the work below done by the end of the week.
Wednesday, April 11:https://goo.gl/forms/3uw58bIEohwaOefJ3
Google classroom update: I've graded the Resistivity video assignment and returned it in Google Classroom , but I won't add it to Power School until I get back sometime in April. That will count for 4th quarter. If you haven't done it, you can still do it for 80% late credit.
Make sure you have joined the right Google classroom class:
Period 8 : the correct code to join is doqtufm. One student in this section accidentally joined my Forensics class and needs to fix that.
Period 5: the correct code to join is fg0rlk.

I've added a video with an explanation of 5 regents questions to answer on magnetism as the last part of PS.4.1. It should be done in Google Classroom,

doomsdayclock.PNGOver the break, I graded what you handed in and updated PowerSchool. When you get back to school April 9th, please check PowerSchool and work on anything you haven't done yet that is entered as a zero. Email me if something seems incorrect or if you have to make up a test online due to absence. The third quarter ends this Friday. I want to make sure all grades are finalized by the end of this week. I've set your lowest test grade to be dropped in calculating your average for the 3rd marking period.Once all the old work is done and handed in to your sub (don't use the mailbox), continue with PS 4.1 below. Any new work we do this week will count for the 4th marking period.

Thursday (Cycle day 4) March 28
easter-monday.jpg

Take test 3.3 in class on paper today. I found a technical problem with accessing responses in Google Classroom in the practice test we did, so I decided I'd rather go with paper for the test to play it safe. It should take around 30 minutes to complete. If you need extra time, ask your substitute teacher.

Nothing is due the Monday you come back after break if you've done and handed into the sub this week everything under "Old Stuff" below Yoda, but if you want to get ahead and get an extra credit stamp, here's the start of what's next. It will count for 4th quarter. Make sure you've got the old stuff done...you can hand things in late work after the break for 80% credit since that is still the last week of the 3rd quarter.

Have a good break!

Wednesday (Cycle day 3) March 27

DoctorStrange.jpg

A common mistake many of you made on the practice quiz was not to flip your final answer for adding resistors in parallel. For three 2 ohm resisters in parallel: 1/Rtotal = 1/2 + 1/2 +1/2 = 3/2 But that is not the final answer (its only 1/Rtotal). To get R total, you have to reciprocate both sides of the equation again, so Rtotal = 2 ohms/3 or 0.67 ohms (not 6. not 1.5).

The following students need to sign in today to make sure they can access Google classroom and that you can do the practice questions.
pd. 5 : Jim M. and Tom G.
pd 8: Tom P, Nevin S and Mike S.

If you didn't do it yesterday, TRY THE PRACTICE TEST IN GOOGLE CLASSROOM TODAY. It won't count in your grade; I just want to be sure everyone knows how to take a test in Google Classroom. Its just one multiple choice and one free response, just to make sure everything is working. If you are having a problem with Google Classroom or the practice test, email me at mfrancesco@socsd.org.

If you've finished everything above & below, use the Notes & Study Page to practice for Test 3.3 on Thursday. It will be an online test in in Google Classroom. If you can't figure out how to join the class using the instruction below, get one of the students who has to show you how to today.

It's been arranged so either Mr. Adler or Mr. Keelty will be able to work with your Physics class on certain days and periods for the rest of my absence. I'm glad they can help you. Ask questions on what you don't understand so far and follow their directions. Ms. Putko has a flashdrive of instructional videos that I would like you to see and will oversee you when you are doing work at your desks to learn the material.

Pd. 5/4 Mr. Adler will teach Regents Physics class each day period 5
and Ms.Putko will be there period 4 on days 2,4,6(lab periods )

Pd. 8/9 Mr. Keelty will teach Regents Physics Days 1, 3, 5 (lab periods)
and Ms.Putko will be there period 8 each day .

Bring your chromebook or computer with earbuds every day .There will be work to do online or in Google classroom.

The first period Ms. Putko is covering I would like you to go online and sign up for a new Google Classroom account I've set up for each class. This will allow you to hand in homework online so we don't have to try to move any more papers back and forth.
How do students sign up for Google classroom?

Join a your new Regents Physics class in Google Classroom
  1. Sign in to Classroom with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.com. ...
  2. At the top, click Add Join class.
  3. Enter the class code for your class highighted on the next line and click "Join. ..".

To join the right class students in Period 5/4 must use join code fg0rlk and Period 8/9 most use join code doqtufm.

Once you are in, please start the first assignment called "Resistivity Video Assignment". Due in GoogleClassroom by Weds night.

Any old work below that was handed in last week I have at home now and will grade and enter soon in Powerschool.
Any old work that wasn't yet handed please hand in to Ms Putko by Wednesday March 28 and someone will get it to me to correct over the break.

Friday (cycle day 6):

1. You should start the new UTexas on Series & Parallel Circuits to get ready for a test on it next week , It counts as a homework, with the usual 80% correct is 100.
2. During the double period, your sub will stream a movie on the topic called
Episode 33: Electric Circuits - The Mechanical Universe
3. See SnowDay Update below from Weds.
SnowDay Update: PS 3.5 has been graded and added to power school. I will try to send graded papers back to you Weds. I would like you to start stapling together each problem set you've finished below and I will have a sub collect them on Thursday and I will have someone get them to my by house for me to grade and add to PowerSchool. If you have a low grade for PS 3.5 now, complete it this week (online UTexas or Power Problems) and also give that to the sub Weds. Don't use the mailbox....staple and hand in everything to sub with name and PS # on it on Thursday . Same thing for old labs . Check Power School to see what you may have to finish or still hand in.

Try to help each other with this work. Next week I will try to set up some way to interact with you for some Q&A (maybe Google Classroom) to see what I can help you with.
Thanks for being patient as I get better.

Classroom Work to start Friday and finish on Monday in class from the RED TEXTBOOK.

PS 3.8 Book Problems on Series & Parallel Circuits + Movie Problems

Odd problems have solutions in back to help you. Try, then peek at solution.
A. Series Circuits Page 619 #1,2,3,4,5. Draw the circuit first , then solve. There is a section of the reference tables that sums up the series formulas. Have that out. Key idea; In series circuits, current is the same all through the circuit but voltages add up across each resistor (like our 3 light bulbs did)

B. Parallel Circuits page 626 #15,16,17
Draw the circuit first , then solve. There is a section of the reference tables that sums up the parallel formulas. Have that out. Key idea; In parallel circuits, voltage is the same for each resistor parallel to the batter but currents split up as it flows into each branch.

C. Unless you have earbuds, do these movies from APlus Physics at home so the sound doesn't distract classmates. I would like you to literally watch and copy out the problems he does as if it were you copying what I do in class, Its the same formulas, but uses a table to organize the calculations, which some students find a helpful organizer in series and parallel circuits. This will take about an hour total to do.
  1. Series Circuits
  2. Parallel Circuits

Save what you do on paper, computer or google drive until I get back.

office meme knowledge is power.jpg

PS 3.7 Series & Parallel II * Weds & Thursday to be started in class.
See if you can do the same simulations online but now we will step it up a level:
a. Do 3 bulbs in series, one switch to turn them all on and off. Then try to drag in the voltmeters to measure the voltage across each bulb, Then add an ammeter to see how much current is coming out of the battery when the circuit is on.
b. Do 3 bulbs parallel, but have 3 separate switches so each can be turned off independently. Check voltages and current with meters, Tell how the readings and brightness change when individual switches are turned on and off.
c. Do these 2 worksheets found at the link below. You can answer on looseleaf or print out and fill-in, whichever you prefer, Goto
http://tzphysics.wikispaces.com/Circuits

Work already started in class on Monday & Tuesday

PS 3.6 Series & Parallel Circuits I
1. Read about series and parallel circuits. Use either one of these pdfs or or read the chapter from the red textbook on series & parallel circuits in your textbook.
2. On looseleaf;
a, Draw 2 light bulbs connected in series with each other and to a battery so they all light up.

b. Draw 2 light bulbs wired parallel to each other and connected to a battery so they would turn all on.

c. Tell how the current, voltages and resistance would be similar or different in the series circuit compared to the parallel circuit that you just drew.

3, Now you will draw these same 2 circuits online with a simulator and see if they actually light up. When the lights work, take a screen shot or save to google drive so you can eventually print it out to hand in.
Go to http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/circuit-construction-kit-dc: click on RUN NOW to start the simulation.

Hint, If it catches fire, you accidentally added a wire that short circuited to the battery without going through the bulb,,,,remove that wire..

Bring earbuds on Monday & Tuesday for online video clips in computer room 205. I will be out at a teaching conference.

Monday & Tuesday,May 16-17:

Online videos: If you have earbuds, start watch these six 5-minute online videos, and answer on looseleaf the question listed next to the link as you finish each one. This may take more than one period, so if you dont have a double period you can finish it Tuesday.

#2 Quantum Leap Max Planck Briefly, in a couple of sentences, tell what you learned in this video that we did not cover in class.
#3 Bohring the Atom Briefly, in a couple of sentences, tell what you learned in this video that we did not cover in class.
#5 Pesky Atoms: Briefly, in a couple of sentences, tell what you learned in this video that we did not cover in class.
#7 Atoms have signatures So how do atoms have "signatures"? What is this gadget they used called a "spectroscope"?
Classical Gas: What ideas in classical physics were eventually contradicted by modern quantum physics?

Book work: start this if you have a double period today; you can finish it tomorrow with the sub.
Read pages 747-748: Tell what the diagram on the bottom of page 748 is trying to show.
Read pages 749-751. What is the difference between the emission spectrum and absorption spectrum of sodium shown on the bottom of the page?
How are they similar to each other?
How did the existence of these spectra change our understanding of the atom in modern physics?
Read pages 752-754.What is the diagram on the right side of page supposed to show about atoms and light?

Comics:

iron man .jpg1. Tony Stark has developed some stealth armor for occasions where he needs to avoid being detected. Read through issue #152 and describe the physics principles he uses to remain undetected. Explain why they are or are not plausibleIMM#152 Stealth Armor.pdf

2. On the 2nd and 3rd page, Virgil mentions “plasma” and “lightning balls”. These are real electrical phenomena. Search for some information on them and, in a few sentences, tell what they are.

3. Tell 2 things that SS does by controlling his electromagnetic field in this story. Decide whether each of these seems to conform with or violate what you know about electricity and fields and justify your decision.

If you have finished early, start to prep for the test on my Notes & Study page.
